Event Confirmation/Cancellation
Safe and fun sailing is fully dependent on weather conditions near and on the water. The SHBCC reserves the right to cancel the event in part, or in whole, if the weather proves unfavorable. Such decisions must often be made just hours before the event.
To confirm that the event will be held as scheduled, please visit this website's homepage on Aug 8, 2026 (or the 9th if we announce a rain date). Please do so before you set out. No additional information will be posted if the event will be held as scheduled. However, if conditions prove unfavorable, a NO-GO alert will be posted on the homepage to save you the trip.
Please keep in mind that extremely local weather phenomena, not available to weather news forecasters, is unlikely but possible. A cancellation of the event when already underway, though unlikely, can prove necessary. Thank you for your understanding.
Road Traffic
Summer "beach traffic" on nearby highways and local roads can be heavy and throw you off schedule. Please check your preferred news feed for the day's traffic report and plan your trip to the club accordingly.
Parking
Please allow our skippers to use the club's parking lot to prepare their boats and gear for you. Please park outside the club gates next to the town's soccer field. You may also park on nearby streets by obeying local traffic regulations. Persons needing assistance or families with strollers can drop off/pick-up at the club tent, but the motor vehicle must not remain parked on the club lot throughout the visit. Please secure your vehicle. The SHBCC does not assume responsibility for the safety and/or security of your property or belongings.
Signing-In for Safety First!
If you wish to sail with us, you must sign a waiver at our Welcome Table under the big-top tent. Also please sign waivers for all minors you wish to accompany on a boat.
Use of a personal flotation device (PFD) per person while boating is also mandatory. We have several club PFDs at hand to lend, including some for smaller bodies. too. If you have your own PFD, bring it along, please, and label it with your name. Follow your skipper's instructions.
The SHBCC reserves the right to refuse admittance to any individual or party that the club deems unsafe or disruptive.
When signing-in and completing waiver forms, please be sure to take a photo of our map showing the club's premises.
What type of sailboats will we sail?
You'll sail with our skippers aboard Hobie Catamarans, such as Hobie Waves & the Hobie 16, Prindles and Nacras. Please note that members may also make other types of vessels available. Waivers cover all use of vessels, whether owned by the club or by club members.
Can my youngster join me aboard?
Minors will be allowed aboard only if accompanied by a legal guardian. Please see the waiver form for details.
When will we sail?
Guests will sail with our skippers on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the event.
Where will we sail?
You'll sail the waters of storied Sandy Hook Bay. For centuries, the Lenape Native Americans called the bay home, and Captain Giovanni da Verrazzano first charted it in 1524.
Will I be briefed?
Your skipper will show you safer, better means of boarding, riding, and unboarding in real-time.
Can I bring my purse aboard? Bag? Backpack?
No. This is due to space constraints and safety considerations. Please plan ahead by leaving such property in your car, or at the beach with a friend. Your waterproof waistbelt could prove handy.
Will I get wet?
Yup. Yes. Affirmative. Boarding and boarding the vessels requires that you walk momentarily in shallow water. Once under sail, saltwater spray is likely to wet everything onboard. Leave your phone with a friend on the beach, or use a waterproof case if you own one. Best to take pictures by the boats while still at the beach, or after your jaunt.
What should I wear?
Dress for safety and comfort. Please check the day's weather forecast to make your better decisions. Wear comfortable clothes that can dry quickly. No jeans, please; they waterlog and will instantly make you clumsy and cold. Water shoes are a smart idea for sailing, and a must for wearing at all times while back at the beach. Once you're off the boat, a weather-appropriate jacket, hoodie, or dry change of clothes will serve you well. If weather is safe for sailing, yet partly cloudy or unseasonably cool, gear up for warmth before, during, and after your sail. Sunscreen is a friend to all.
What about practical sport accessories?
Yes! Bring 'em! Under sail, everything that can blow away will blow away, often including contact lenses. Sunglasses can be useful; use straps for your eyewear and hats. Hair ties help if you'd like to keep hair off your face. Best to leave the jewelry at home.
How long will we sail?
Please ask your skipper. Many things will come into play, such as wind, weather, the number of other guests on the beach awaiting their turn, etc. If you must get back to shore sooner for any reason, please inform your skipper as soon as possible.
Are there other amenities?
Yes! We're happy to have you with us! You may use the club bathrooms, enjoy the shade under our big-top tent, and grab a hot dog or burger from our outdoor grill. Non-alcoholic beverages too. You can enjoy the beach at any time, but please stay clear of the water's edge where our skippers will stage their operations. Do not enter club property marked for authorized use only. Please deposit your party's trash in the proper containers located near the club's big-top tent.
What if I have other questions?
We hope you do! Ask us about sailing, about the club, about club membership, even if you don't have a boat, etc. Our club members will be at hand to provide answers!
Is this going to be fun?
Heck yeah! Come on down!
